Here we find ourselves in the shadowy world of the cave, witness to the creation of a handprint through the use of the mouth spraying technique: surrounded by animal images and entoptic phosphenes which float in the darkness, the figure makes contact with the cave wall. Modern commentators do not understand what these handprints signify, whether an expression of ownership, a kind of magical hunting signal or a simple communion with the images on the wall; nonetheless we as contemporary observers understand the need to place hands and to make contact. The specific symbolic meaning is lost but the general sensation of contact is utterly familiar.
