In 2018, PaintUp project director Anthea Rossouw told me how some generations ago, a complete leopard skeleton had been found in a cave not far from Melkhoutfontein. From the calcite over the skeleton, it appeared to be very ancient and not a recently deceased animal. This story set off an imaginative flight of fancy about the Khoi-San peoples who once lived in the region - I imagined them coming to the cave to pay homage to the leopard spirit before setting off on a hunt dressed as leopards, arriving down to the Goukou river to hunt antelopes. Given that msot of my deisgns have been grounded into relatively well-founded archaeological and anthropological facts, it felt very good to let my mind run free and create a design that was essentially an imaginative work of fiction! This design was realised on Letzmi's House.
