The Strandlopers image also proved popular in the community, particularly as some people have preserved a few cultural memories of this historical people, and links with the Fish Traps in the estuary at Stillbay which were built by the ancestors of the people of Melkhoutfontein, and after many years are still functional. Originally envisaged for a dividing wall, project director Anthea Rossouw wanted to emphasise value of the 'informally built' aspects of the town's architecture, and so this image was painted on a plaster-board extension to a brick house inhabitated by Miena and three generations of her family. Repairs were made to the boards before painting, and the family were delighted with the image that now graces their home.
