This dual-image artwork was created to celebrate the occasion of my husband’s mother’s 60th birthday. It depicts the family releasing balloons from Southport pier, in memory of loved ones no longer with us. Under UV illumination, however, another figure appears: my husband’s step-father, who was the love of his mother’s life, and who sadly passed away in 2006. This is a relatively simple and sentimental image, but there are a few subtleties: for example, the edge of the pier marks the boundary between life and death, with the balloons sent as messages to those lost. Another hint is that all the family are gazing out over that boundary, except our niece, who looks up at her mother, too young to understand. But the central message of this artwork is that the bonds of family and of love are not broken by death, if anything they are strengthened: this is a fundament of being human…
