In Summer 2019, I was invited to exhibit new work at an exhibition called 'Fêlures et Lumière' at Atelier Gustave in Paris, and I decided to produce three works which made use of old sketches in a new way, going back to my roots to strike out in new directions. In 2010, I produced a series of sketches for a series of longform portrait artworks with the working title 'Man Of Visions' or 'Human Visions'. These sketches evoked a number of foundational visionary experiences that have lived within me for many years, often from the time before I became an artist, and which I had never fully addressed in my arts practice.

This first artwork remembers a shamanic meditation I experienced back in 2001, in which I was guided into a deep inner world by climbing down a ladder into a misty, occluded landscape of forests, villages and presences which I came to call Beings of Blood. The human figure is surrounded by fire, remembering a theme that has run through my life that "...the brightest path in life is often through the fire..."; this guiding principle is also echoed in the artwork's title.
