A number of cave and rupestric art sites feature images of animals consisting of meandering dots. Rather than depict the animal accurately, these forms appear to emerge from the cave walls the longer one gazes at them. Whether they represent 'spirit' animals or whether they were designed to resonate with the visions of the hunters in the caves I do not know, but it is remarkable how this pattern of dots even now opens the eyes to the insubstantial qualities of natural life - the soul of an animal or its vitality, or its echo in the world...
